Kellen Homes & VELUX create light-filled living spaces in high-spec, energy-efficient homes.

With remote and hybrid working looking like they are here to stay, new homes are adapting to increasingly become places of both work and rest. As a greater amount of time is now spent in the home in general, housebuilders are focusing on building light, bright living spaces that incorporate a number of energy-efficient features to help reduce household running costs as well as create a healthful home.

To help achieve this goal, Warrington-based Kellen Homes partnered with VELUX to bring daylight in through the roof of the ground floor extended living areas in several of its house types at its Mill Vale development in Middleton, Greater Manchester.

Creating a light-filled, energy-efficient home

Dedicated to delivering uncompromising quality in every new home they build, Kellen Homes design each house with the best use of space in mind, creating light and spacious living areas which are both comfortable and functional. Roof windows are low-energy light sources and can reduce the need for artificial lighting by up to 20% in homes. By incorporating VELUX roof windows, Kellen Homes achieved an effective way to help prospective homeowners save energy on heating, cooling, and lighting throughout the year, contributing to the overall energy efficiency of their home.

Bringing the outside in

To enhance the thoughtfully designed, high-specification homes at Mill Vale, Kellen Homes also carefully considered the detailing of the developments’ landscapes and outdoor spaces. Given that the nation spends 90% of its time indoors on average, it’s important that its homes are not only healthy and sustainable, but also create a sense of well-being. Increasing the connection of the outside to the inside of the home was an important factor for Kellen Homes in choosing to incorporate VELUX roof windows in its development to open up the ground floor living space and bring the outdoors into the home with increased levels of daylight through the roof.

Mollie Thomlinson, head of sales and marketing for Kellen Homes, said: “There are several different house types within our Mill Vale development incorporating an extended ground floor living space with the kitchen/dining area that feature VELUX roof windows fitted over glazed French doors out into the garden. The VELUX roof windows really help to bring daylight further into the room creating a bright, welcoming space for our homeowners to enjoy.”

“Three new show homes opened at Mill Vale at the beginning of this year, two of which showcase the VELUX roof windows. The reactions from prospective homebuyers have been really positive, with many remarking specifically about the high levels of daylight and the feeling of spaciousness created by the additional roof windows allowing them to enjoy the extended, open-plan living space with a connection to the outside from inside the home.”

Based in Warrington, Cheshire, Kellen Homes is committed to building modern, sustainable, and energy-efficient homes in the greater Manchester area and around the Northwest to suit a range of lifestyles and budgets for people who value quality and style. Their responsible approach to design offers modern living with low energy bills and a low carbon footprint.
