How A Passion for Dream Homes Lead to My Southern Home Television Show

“My Southern Home” television host, Kimberly Greenwell, wasn’t always in front of the camera. Kimberly spent most of her career helping companies with television advertising and public relations.

One snowy day in December of 2014, Kimberly got a phone call that would change her life forever. A television station in Louisville, Kentucky called to ask if she would be interested in producing and hosting a local home show.

“I will never forget that moment. I remember everything about it. It had just started snowing and I was at a stoplight. Big, fluffy snowflakes were all around me, and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It has been five years now, and it still hard to believe. One phone call changed my life in ways I could never imagine,” said Kimberly.

At the time, Kimberly was the publicist for the Home, Garden, and Remodeling Show and Homearama, which is an annual Louisville event that showcases custom built new state of the art houses. Her love of homes, expertise on home-related topics, and on-camera experience made her a perfect fit for the show. “Your Kentuckiana Home” launched in April 2015.

Then, in 2017, she decided to produce her own show called “My Southern Home.” According to Kimberly, “I decided to launch my own show for several reasons; the main one was I felt a need to do more, to help more. There was so much we weren’t covering, and creatively my hands were tied. It was scary, but I knew it was time to go out on my own.”

A few days before her first show debuted, Vinny Barber, with the Barber Cabinet Company, called and asked if Kimberly could bring the show to Nashville, Tennessee.

One year later, Saturday, August 4, 2018, “My Southern Home” launched in Nashville on MYTV 30. Now with ten seasons behind her, Kimberly helps homeowners in Louisville, KY, and Middle Tennessee build or create their dream home by introducing them to home-related experts.

  2. Architecture: Depending on the region, Southern homes may include various architectural styles such as Colonial, Victorian, Greek Revival, or Southern Plantation styles, each with its own distinctive features.
  3. Natural Materials: Emphasis on natural materials like wood, stone, and brick, which add to the home’s charm and character.
  4. Gardens and Landscaping: Well-maintained gardens with colorful flowers, lush green lawns, and perhaps even vegetable patches or herb gardens are common.
  5. Wide Hallways and High Ceilings: Many Southern homes have wide hallways and high ceilings, contributing to a sense of spaciousness and airiness.
  6. Traditional Furnishings: Furniture tends to be sturdy and often includes pieces with a timeless appeal, such as wooden tables, upholstered armchairs, and antique or vintage items.
  7. Warm Color Palettes: Colors often reflect warmth and hospitality, such as soft yellows, creamy whites, earthy browns, and shades of blue or green inspired by nature.
  8. Southern Hospitality: A focus on hospitality and comfort, with spaces designed for gatherings, family meals, and entertaining guests.
  9. Porch Swings and Outdoor Living: Beyond just a porch, Southern homes often have outdoor living areas with features like swings, hammocks, or outdoor kitchens for enjoying the mild Southern climate.
